2016 Artist Travel Prize recipient Stephen Towns

Application deadline – Monday, July 31, 2017

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, Inc. (BOPA) is proud to announce the second edition of the Municipal Art Society of Baltimore City Artist Travel Prize, sponsored by the Municipal Art Society of Baltimore City (MASOB). The Municipal Art Society of Baltimore was founded in 1899 as part of the City Beautiful movement. It is one of only two remaining societies to be operating under its original charter “to provide sculptural and pictorial decoration and ornaments for the public buildings, streets and open spaces in the City of Baltimore, and to help generally beautify the City.” Artistic contributions to the City span more than one hundred years. In 2016 the MASOB embarked on a path to provide new opportunities to Baltimore artists and art places within the City. This prize will award $6,000 to a visual artist or visual artist collaborators, living in Baltimore City. Successful proposals will be selected from submissions that clearly articulate the artist’s reason for travel and how it relates to their work, along with support materials. The $6,000 prize is intended to function as funding for travel essential to an artist’s studio practice that an artist may not otherwise be able to afford.

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE 2017

From May to December 2017, the North Avenue Knowledge Exchange invites the public to participate in free public programs, including one-off workshops, ongoing classes, and community get-togethers in the form of “Knowledge Exchange Days.” Building on our pilot project in February 2016, the North Avenue Knowledge Exchange seeks to extend its collaboration with communities along North Avenue. We have launched an open call for teachers/workshop leaders to develop skill-building and skill-sharing content. The Knowledge Exchange provides space, scheduling, small artist fees for workshop leaders, and visibility through our marketing and promotion platforms.

How do I get involved?

  • Submit a workshop proposal for a workshop you would like to teach!
  • Submit an idea for a topic you would like to learn!
  • Sign-up for our newsletter below to receive more information about our upcoming calls for content coordinators, workshop leaders, and volunteers for our summer and fall sessions.

VisArts Galleries invites your students to apply for NextGen 4.0 in our Kaplan Gallery. NextGen features aspiring 17 to 27-year-old local artists who have little to no experience exhibiting their work in a professional gallery. NextGen offers these artists an opportunity to bring their artwork to the public and to experience this process. The exhibition was developed to address this demographic of artists which may include high school students, undergraduate students or recent grads who are uncertain about how to proceed with a career in art or what it takes to be an artist.

The process to apply for an exhibition can be intimidating with little or no experience. Included in our application site are a number of resources to help your student create a competitive application and to develop their professional practices as an artist.

We hope that you will encourage your students to apply to NextGen 4.0. The application deadline is June 1, 2017, 11:59 PM and the exhibition will take place July 21– August 20th at VisArts in Rockville, Maryland. You can find the application and more details on our website: www.visarts.submittable.com/submit/81402/nextgen-4-0.
