Maryland Art Place (MAP) is now accepting applications for a fall 2014 IMPACT project. IMPACT is an annual, public art program developed to extend Maryland Art Place’s reach to broader audiences. Each IMPACT project is unique and developed based on the partnering site.

This fall, MAP is partnering with the Neighborhood Design Center (NDC) and Art Lives Here in Prince George’s County. Collectively, project partners have identified what will be a vacant lot, post demolition of the former Northeastern Supply building located at 3807 Rhode Island Avenue, just north of the DC/Maryland, state line across from the Gateway Arts Center and Brentwood Arts Exchange. Demolition of the pictured building below is scheduled for September 2014. Post demolition, the property will prominently include a long fence, which can be incorporated as a sub structure for the project.

Project Parameters: Proposals should investigate or have a dialogue between design practice and contemporary art, and how public space can be re-imagined and activated in engaging ways. Cross-disciplinary teams or pairs of artist/designers are encouraged and could include collaborations such as: ‘landscape architect + sculptor’, ‘performance artist + fashion designer’, ‘architect + social practitioner’, or ‘industrial designer + sound artist’. The proposed project must also include some type of community engagement that takes place either before or during the span of the work. Community engagement could include workshops, performances, community collaborations or an artist(s) presentation. Artists are encouraged to visit the building site prior to submission and all proposed work(s) must be able to withstand the weather elements. The project will remain in public view for as short as one year, but no less than one year. Both 2-D and 3-D works are applicable to this site.

**Please note that work should be appropriate for viewers of all ages.

Eligibility: This call is open to all artists and artists’ groups 18 years of age or older living in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia region. Prior public art experience is not required but encouraged.

The selected artist/artist team will receive up to a $6,000 stipend to cover the cost of materials, time and labor costs of the project. Installation is scheduled to take place September 26th through the 16th, 2014. All participating partners will host a public reception at the site on Friday, October 17th.

Please send your proposal to impact@mdartplace.org by 5pm on Wednesday September 3rd, 2014. Along with your application, you are welcome to submit up to 3 images or illustrated sketches. There is a $10 submission fee to apply if you are not a MAP member. Payments can be made through Click & Pledge. Past installation work samples will also be accepted in addition to proposed sketches/mock-ups.

Proposals being accepted for a performance at this year’s Transmodern Festival, Sept 21-27, 2014.

Tied by your Tongue is an immersive evening of dance and performance around the idea of language; its oppressive and liberating nature. Artists will explore how language shapes societal logic, culture, norms, perspectives, and understanding. Audience will be expected to move and shift through the venue space, engaging with a variety of performances and installed environments. Performances will occur on a linear time program so that the audience will not miss any one performance.

I’m trying to keep the evening to about an hour to an hour and a half. Performances should be 8-10 minutes. I am also interested in performance that is immersive in its set design, so installations are welcome. There will be at least 2 evenings of this performance, at most, 3.

I’m looking for artists who want to push their own boundaries, step outside the box, and really dig deep. Think experimental, untraditional! I am asking for proposals because I have a limited amount of time for the evening. Artists will receive a small stipend.

I hope this opportunity is of interest to you! Deadline for the proposal is soon! August 15th. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at smaktastic@gmail.com I am open and would love to hear your ideas.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: PLAY

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: September 26, 2014, 5pm

NOTIFICATION DATE: early November

WHAT IS PLAY?

PLAY is an exhibition that will examine games and play through the lens of contemporary art. We will look at play from a variety of vantage points, including: play as a vital tool for experimentation and innovation in art-making; play as a fruitful source of subject matter and content; and play as a strategy to interact with and engage audiences in contemporary art. This exhibition will take place in the galleries at AAC and on the grounds surrounding the building.

AAC will select approximately 7-10 artists to present works in our 7 main gallery spaces. We are looking for artists working in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, installation, new media and more to propose a series of works, installations, and concepts that will occupy individual exhibition spaces. Out-of-the-box exhibitions concepts that employ new technologies like augmented reality and mobile applications are also encouraged.

A modest stipend to help offset transportation, production, and other costs will be provided to each artist.

STAY TUNED!

AAC will release two additional calls for proposals related to this exhibition for artists to activate our lawn with public art projects. The first call (to be released in early September) will be for two projects that will run for the duration of the exhibition. The second call (to be released in early 2015) will be for artist designed lawn games for two pop-up community events.

HowardCounty

Art Maryland 2014, the nineteenth multi-media statewide  juried exhibit sponsored by the Howard County Arts Council, is a premier juried  showcase for artists in the region. Entry is open to visual artists 18 years or  older, residing in Maryland or within a 100-mile radius of Ellicott City, MD.  The juror for the exhibit, which runs from October 31–December 12, is Julia  Marciari-Alexander, the new Executive Director of the Walters Art Museum. For  complete details, visit http://www.hocoarts.org/exhibits.php

The Baltimore Museum of Art’s dynamic contemporary wing exhibition program continues with three new exhibitions of rarely shown works by some of the most intriguing artists working today.

Black Box: Anri Sala (September 14, 2014 – February 22, 2015) Inspired by art historian Michael Fried’s analysis of the art of Anri Sala (Albanian, born 1974) in his book Four Honest Outlaws (2011), this exhibition features Sala’s 43-minute film 1395 Days Without Red, selected by the art historian and the artist. The film recreates the terror and uncertainty civilians endured during the siege of Sarajevo by interspersing scenes of the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra rehearsing the First Movement of Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique with those of a musician making her way through what became known as Sniper Alley. The film’s title references a caution to civilians to avoid wearing bright colors so as to not draw a sniper’s attention. The exhibition is curated by the artist and Michael Fried, The Johns Hopkins University J. R. Herbert Boone Chair in the Humanities, and organized by Curator of Contemporary Art Kristen Hileman.

On Paper: Alternate Realities (September 21, 2014 – April 12, 2015) This exhibition presents 26 prints by a diverse group of artists living and working in America who are engaging in a dialog between high and low art by playfully exaggerating and reimaging the visual language of popular culture—religious stories, myths, and folk tales—to consider larger issues of class, gender, and politics. Among the works featured are two complete portfolios by Raymond Pettibon and Trenton Doyle Hancock, as well as newly acquired works by Wangechi Mutu, Amy Cutler, Chitra Ganesh, Toshio Sasaki, Iona Rozeal Brown, and William Villalongo. A long, accordion-bound book by Enrique Chagoya will span the center of the gallery. This exhibition marks the first time all of these works will be on view. The exhibition is curated by Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings & Photographs Ann Shafer.

Front Room: Dario Robleto (November 16, 2014 – March 29, 2015) This exhibition features Robleto’s Setlists for a Setting Sun body of work—poetic sculptures, prints, and cut-paper works that weave together the histories of recorded light and sound by drawing inspiration from nautical history, space exploration, early sound recordings, and family legacies within American popular music. The Front Room exhibition debuts three new works created by Robleto (American, born 1972) at the Headlands Center of the Arts in Sausalito, CA, as part of its new program to commission art from outstanding contemporary artists. Two of the new works were inspired by the BMA’s proximity to the Space Telescope Science Institute on the campus of The Johns Hopkins University. This exhibition lends a contemporary component to the BMA’s American Wing reopening celebration. The exhibition is curated by Curator of Contemporary Art Kristen Hileman. Since the contemporary wing reopening in 2012, the BMA has presented a dozen exhibitions of works by emerging and mid-career artists from Baltimore and beyond. These diverse exhibitions are presented in the new Front Room Gallery, Black Box Gallery for light, sound, and moving image works, and On Paper Gallery for light-sensitive contemporary prints, drawings, and photographs.
