AKIMBO is looking for artists to dream big, to propose ideas never seen before at AKIMBO, and to question the definitions of dance and movement art. AKIMBO is encouraging interdisciplinary projects, proposals that take artistic risks, and ideas that focus on a strong artistic vision/voice from the company or artist. PROJECT SUMMARYProject owner, Monogram Residential Trust and managing agent, Urban Preservation Foundation are seeking to commission one artist or artist team to design, fabricate and install site-specific permanent public artwork for their OM – On Mission development located at 1401 Mission Street in San Francisco.The work should activate and enliven the façade(s) and/or lobby area of the striking, contemporary residential building, and appeal to both building residents and to the public.

This is a high profile opportunity for an imaginative and innovative artist to create a large scale artwork in a very prominent location.

ELIGIBILITY
This project is open to all professional artists and artist teams, based locally, nationally and internationally. Demonstrated experience completing and coordinating exterior art installations with construction project managers, and related contractors, engineers, and architects is preferred. Interested artists should apply only if they are able to complete the project in accordance with the schedule. Entries not meeting eligibility guidelines shall be withdrawn from consideration.

PROJECT BUDGET
The total budget for the commissioned artwork is $225,000, inclusive of all artistic elements, artist’s fees and expenses associated with the project, including but not limited to: artist’s travel, design and fabrication costs, transportation, insurance, documentation, presentations, and installation. Budget will be allocated appropriately based on artwork scope and scale.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The OM – On Mission development is located at 1401 Mission Street in the SOMA/Mid-Market Corridor bordered by music clubs, the colorful Mission District, and lively Hayes Valley neighborhood. The beautiful 12-story building utilizes metal panels and generous areas of glass to create a dramatic new residential development that will serve as a tranquil urban oasis in the vibrant heart of San Francisco. The project will feature 121 contemporary lofts available for lease, and an abundance of outstanding amenities including, a north and south facing roof deck with a grilling area, fire pits and fitness center, a stunning entry lobby, and enclosed garage parking. The building is owned by Monogram Residential Trust, and designed and developed by Martin Building Company in collaboration with Arquitectonica.

Arquitectonica’s design for On Mission reinterprets residential building design with an innovative contemporary point of view within the parameters of timeless principals of balance and proportions. The façade is made of two-story window bays framed by metal panels. This concept is further articulated by treating each bay as a whole entity, with “cubes” that are slightly pushed in or pulled out to animate the façade and give additional depth and dimension. This gives the building the appearance of playfully stacked living pods, each individually expressed. The color varies slightly for each cube to reinforce the depth of the articulation.

The On Mission development is on the corner of 10th Street and Mission Street. The building is designed such that a vertical expression is set forth to break the building mass and mark the street corner. On Mission’s design corresponds to its immediate neighbors by providing a plane break in the façade that relates to the height of the neighboring building. At the rear of On Mission, a corner has been sliced away to provide a landscaped courtyard and to allow for windows to overlook the landscaping.

Call for Artists: Mural Artist Community Engagement/International Arts Exchange

Meridian International Center – a non-profit based in Washington, D.C. – is now accepting applications for the 2015-2016 Community Engagement through the Arts Exchange Program for American mural artists. Funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Cultural Programs Division in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs with programming support from Meridian, four American artists will travel abroad to collaborate with local youth and underserved populations on community-based projects in the mural arts. Artists will design, implement and administer a 3.5-week, in-country program based on local community issues for the country specified. Projects should be designed to advance U.S. foreign policy goals in that country by addressing a local community issue, as youth or women’s empowerment, gender-based violence, social inclusion, regional stability, and the environment.

Meridian is currently accepting applications for projects in Brazil, Cuba, India, and Turkey. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. EST on March 31, 2015.

Rochester Contemporary Art Center’s (RoCo), international small art phenomenon returns for the 8th year! Help us once again to build an incredible exhibition of thousands of artworks made and donated by celebrities, international & local artists, designers, college students, youths, and YOU.
Join Artists from Around the World
Each artwork must be 6×6 square inches (15cm) or mounted to a 6×6 board, signed only on the back, and exhibited anonymously. All entries will be accepted and exhibited in the gallery and online. All artworks will also be offered for sale to the public for $20 each to benefit RoCo. Artist names will be revealed to the buyer upon purchase and all artworks will remain on display through July 12, 2015. Sold Out artists’ names will be revealed next to their work online on July 3. Artists may enter up to 4 artworks of any medium (2D or 3D) and there is no fee to enter. Thank you for your participation!

Call for Artists: Emerging Artist Residency (Iowa)

GRIN CITY COLLECTIVE’S EMERGING ARTIST RESIDENCY

The only subsidized artist residency program specifically designed for undergraduate artists.

Summer Session: 6/15/15 – 7/11/15 | Applications Due: March 10, 2015

· Open to writers, visual and performance artists
· Individual studio + bedroom + $200 stipend
· Culminating gallery show, performance & reading at Stewart Art Gallery

During the summer, Grin City invites eight college level writers, visual or performance artists for a special, subsidized 4-week residency. Artists accepted into the Emerging Artist Residency receive individual housing and studio space. The residency ends in a final group show and reading in the downtown Stewart Art Gallery.

Ideal candidates for the Emerging Artist Residency have a strong portfolio and are serious about pursuing a career in their field for which they are applying, but do not need to have majored in it. They embrace artistic and work-based collaboration and feel they match Grin City’s creative mission. Those eligible for the Emerging Artist Residency are juniors or seniors in college at the time of application and must be 21 or older on or before June 15 (please do not email asking about age exceptions).

Grinnell College students are strongly urged to apply. Sponsored by Grinnell College, Grin City Collective will select one eligible Grinnell College student of exceptional quality for its 2015 EAR residency.
