Let’s FACE It – a portrait painting class taught by Cameron Shojaei

So you have now purchased a digital (DSLR) camera, but are overwhelmed with all the features? Or perhaps you were hoping your images could look a little more creative or visually interesting? Professional photographer and artist Randall Gornowich brings over 18 years of teaching experience to this series of classes in basic digital photography which he designed for the beginner and intermediate student. In this class you will learn camera basics, simple technical ins and outs and elements of design as you take on weekly creative assignments. By the end you will understand how to create more interesting compositions and solve many photographic challenges. Class will include short lectures, handouts, projected presentations, demos and critiques.

Four Saturdays from 11:30am to 1:00pm. May 17th, May 24th, May 31st, and June 7th.

 

Precious Metal Clay Medallions – a jewelry class taught by Sheri Collins

Students will learn to create one-of-a-kind FINE SILVER (99.9% solid silver) medallions using Art Clay Precious Metal Clay. They will learn rolling, texturing, finishing, stone embedding and firing techniques using a portable, hand-held Propylene torch. All techniques of decoration, polishing, firing and finishing their medallions will be covered. They will also have multiple choices on how to wear them – as a pendant, brooch, or bracelet. These make fantastic gifts!

This class will be offered three times:

May 17th from 1:30-4:30pm, June 14th from 1:00pm-4:00pm, and June 21st from 1:00pm-4:00pm.

Co-Lab(oration) Call for Entries at School 33!

School 33 is now accepting artist portfolios for the third installation of its Co-Lab(oration) project, funded by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation!

Artists interested in collaborating with other artists of different disciplines, to create a new environment within the main entrance of the Center’s building, should apply. 3 artists will be selected to collaborate on this project that will be on view for at least 1 year. Each selected artist will be awarded an honorarium of $3000 for this collaboration; this project also comes with a budget for supplies and materials. Artists will be selected based on the strengths of their portfolios. Artists are invited to visit School 33 Art Center and see the actual space prior to submitting a portfolio for consideration.   The finished project will be unveiled in early September 2014.

Co-Lab(oration) is an on-going platform for diverse artists to work collaboratively in a process of creative exploration, resulting in the development of multiple new works. The project should cultivate the production and exhibition of new artwork that integrates the ideas of artists from varied disciplines, encourage artistic experimentation and creative risk-taking to support the development of innovative practices or new artistic forms.

Selections will be made by our panel of jurors:
Anthony Cervino, Associate Professor of Art at Dickenson College, Carlisle, PA.
René Treviño, Exhibitions Coordinator at School 33 Art Center, Baltimore, MD.

Ismael Carrillo has been working as a visual artist in Barcelona for well over two decades. His artwork appears in various publications worldwide.   He currently is teaching at the illustration department of MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) and at the Fine Arts Department of the Corcoran College of Art + Design, Washington D.C.

The authentic experience in art production for serious contemporary artists requires an acute awareness of both the external apparatus of the art world – including the rigors of academia and the fickleness of the market – and a finely honed consciousness of the internal voice that motivates the making of art. One might argue that the latter point is far more important. Nonetheless in discussing these two extreme poles on a spectrum with many artists, I find that there is a psychological terrain akin to bipolarity that many endure in the studio. Mood swings, isolation, mania, doubt, exhilaration, depression, and inspiration are but a few conditions that characterize and color the artistic (and curatorial) process.

The exhibition includes painting (Hedieh Ilchi, Dan Perkins), sculpture (Mary Frank), installation (Lauren Frances Adams), video and performance (Katie Duffy). As artists embrace more means of visual communication within their distinct œuvres, mixing up and challenging approaches to their media, we are treated to a more complex, sometimes dizzying array of aesthetic and social issues that can lead us, the viewer, to parse our own difficult yet pleasurable spectrum of response and understanding.

School 33 Art Center is pleased to present Animal Sightings, a series of screen prints by Lotta Art 2013 Best-in-Show winner Rebecca Katz.

This series explores the barriers and boundaries between animals and humans. Through encounters with wild animals in their natural ecosystems and interactions with our pets at home, we have an opportunity to consider animals’ complex and varied forms of communication and sensory experiences. What is their experience? How is their understanding of the world the same or different than ours? These multi-process screen prints explore the complicated relationships, connections and friendships between animals and humans.

IN THE ROUND, BY MORGAN FRAILEY AND KRISTIN MCWHARTER

In the Round is a collaborative project by Baltimore based artists Morgan Frailey and Kristin McWharter. On view are a series of fiber-based sculptures and performative objects that are constructed via traditional knitting and weaving techniques and that speak to a larger idea of social circles and interactions. The work addresses both the physical challenges of creating space as well as the challenges of breaking social barriers.
