SANDTOWN EMPLOYS 80 CITY YOUTH THROUGH COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECTS
Summer program offers workforce development and training from professional artists
The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, in partnership with Jubilee Arts, launch Art @ Work: Sandtown, a five-week summer employment program for Baltimore City youth. Beginning Monday, June 29 through Friday, July 31, Art @ Work: Sandtown will employ 80 young people as artist apprentices under master teaching artists to create eight highly visible murals throughout their community. The program is an expansion of Jubilee Arts’ year-round art programs for teens. Art @ Work employs youth enrolled in the city’s “YouthWorks” initiative, a workforce development program that matches young people between the ages of 14 and 21 to five-week work experiences with private sector, nonprofit, and city and state government employers.
The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts announces the recipients of the MECU Neighborhood Event Grants. For 2015, 116 neighborhood associations and community-based nonprofit organizations were selected to receive funding of up to $1,000. The program awards organizations with cash grants for the purpose of producing special events, such as festivals, back-to-school rallies, block parties and health fairs. The MECU Neighborhood Event Grants program is supported by MECU: Baltimore’s Credit Union and administered by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts. Additional support was provided by the Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development.
“MECU is proud of its sponsorship of the Neighborhood Event Grants. This is the fourth year we have helped so many of our community organizations in Baltimore reach the people they serve,” said Herman Williams Jr., Chairman of the Board. “As Baltimore’s Credit Union, we have a commitment to help develop strong communities and this grant program lets us reach every corner of the City.”

From the Wide Angle Youth Media Facebook page:
“In the wake of exciting distribution and programming accomplishments here at Wide Angle recently, we regret to share some unfortunate news. Over the weekend, the main Wide Angle Youth Media office was broken into. Although the intruder made quite a mess of things, we were very fortunate that no one was harmed, our media lab was untouched, and many of our cameras are still safe and in working order. Programming will be back in action today at all of our sites, including Miller’s Court, but the robbery has created a direct impact in our cash flow and we are reaching out with an immediate call for donations. Please share, and thank you for your support during this emotional turn of events. www.wideanglemedia.org/donate“
Arts Advocacy Day is your opportunity to receive crucial advocacy training from experts in the field and then put that training into practice. Hosted by Americans for the Arts and cosponsored by 85+ national arts organizations, National Arts Advocacy Day is the largest gathering of its kind, bringing together a broad cross section of America’s cultural and civic organizations. Grassroots advocates from across the country come to Washington DC to meet with their members of Congress in support of issues like arts education policy, the charitable tax deduction, and funding for the National Endowment for the Arts.
On Monday, join hundreds of your colleagues from across the country for interactive advocacy training and peer-to-peer learning and networking. That night, get inspired by our Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts & Public Policy at the Kennedy Center.
Then, on Tuesday, after the Congressional Arts Kick Off, you’ll meet with your congressional representatives to share your story about the impact and transformative power that the arts have in your community.
Why should I register?
At Arts Advocacy Day, you get three things you can’t get anywhere else.
- Networking with your fellow arts advocates from across the country and go on congressional visits led by State Captains.
- Learning the latest research facts and figures on the arts to help make your case.
- Strategizing with experienced advocates during an interactive role play session on how to make the case for the arts and arts education to your members of Congress.
