Call for Artists: Denver Public Art Project

The DEN Art and Culture’s Public Art Program is currently soliciting applications for an exterior commission for Denver Fire Station 35 – either free-standing or integrated.

The total commission budget is $200,000 USD (all inclusive).

  1. Site specific: Artwork should be reflective of the modern and timeless architecture that will house Fire Station 35. This iconic building includes materials such as corrugated metals, translucent features, and a sweeping cantilevered roofline in addition to traditional elements: a hose tower and large apparatus bays. There are two prominent locations for artwork:
  •  A large concrete block wall on the south façade, roughly 12’ tall by 90’ long. Additional art components could be carried      from the facade onto the hose tower and into the landscape west of the building; or
  •  A free-standing work on the west side of the property.

The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District is currently accepting applications for the Bethesda Painting Awards, downtown Bethesda’s 11th annual juried art competition and exhibition honoring painters. This competition will be awarding $14,000 in prize monies to four selected painters.

Attached please find applications for this event. You can apply by mail or online here. The deadline for submissions is Friday, February 21, 2015.

The competition will be juried by Arnold Kemp, Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Painting and Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University; John Morrell, Chair of the Department of Art and Art History and Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at Georgetown University; and Nora Sturges, Professor of Art and head of Painting and Drawing at Towson University.

The City of Austin Art in Public Places (AIPP) program of the Cultural Arts Division, Economic Development Department (EDD) seeks exceptional emerging and established artists working in a variety of visual media and artistic approaches for its 2015-17 Pre-Qualified Artist Pool.

Selected artists or artist teams from the Pool may be contracted to design and fabricate artwork for eligible Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs) of various scopes, timelines, and budgets throughout the City of Austin. Artwork budgets are expected to range from $20,000 to $300,000, and artwork opportunities exist in a variety of public settings and facilities. Artists working in a variety of media will be considered.

Call for Artists: 2015-17 Suwanee SculpTour Public Art Exhibit

The Suwanee Public Arts Commission (PAC) is seeking proposals from artists and/or artist teams for design, execution, and installation of original outdoor sculptures to be displayed for a period of just less than two years, from May 2015 through the end of March 2017, in downtown Suwanee.   The objective is to have a well-balanced exhibit of sculptures with a variety of styles, types, and sizes.  The deadline for submissions is January 9.  See the RFP.

Call for Artists: Gottlieb Foundation Grants

The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation is accepting proposals for Individual Support Grants.

Description: Since 1976, the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation has been making Individual Support Grants to painters, sculptors and printmakers who have been creating mature art for at least 20 years and who are in current financial need. This program was conceived in order to recognize and support the serious, fully-committed artist. Twelve grants are awarded each year.

Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate that they have been working in a mature phase of their art for at least 20 years. Maturity is based on the level of intellectual, technical, and creative development maintained over this time period. Artists must show that their primary involvement has been with their artistic goals, regardless of other personal or financial responsibilities. Artists must work in the disciplines of painting, sculpture, or printmaking.

In addition to the maturity requirement, eligibility for an Individual Support grant is determined by the applicant’s current financial need. A financial disclosure page is included in the application which must be completed and signed.

Artist Resources: Grantmaker’s Fair

On December 6, GBCA & BOPA are co-hosting a grantwriting overview led by Artists U founder Andrew Simonet immediately followed by a Grantmakers Fair.

The Fair is meant to be an (almost) one-stop shop where you can speak directly with staff responsible for the Baker Artist Awards, Rubys Artist Project Grants, Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts’ Creative Baltimore Fund, PNC Transformative Art Prize and Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize, as well as The Contemporary’s Grit Fund and the Maryland State Art Council’s Individual Artist Award Program.

There is a new arts writing/review/essay site in Baltimore!

From their first post: post-office arts journal is a critical platform aiming to respond to the prolific output in Baltimore’s alternative arts venues as well as a publication space for open-ended essays/thought exercises both related to and not related to the arts.
It is founded with a few specific thoughts in mind. The first is that Baltimore’s arts are growing quickly and demand a new voice that can join the currently strong (but limited) writing landscape in this city. The creativity found in this city is unique and fecund. A goal is to reduce the amount of programming that goes unaddressed. When shows go up and come down without receiving proper consideration and dialogue, opportunities for development and conversation are lost. Critical writing is important for more than just audience, it is a resource useful to artists and venues alike as a way to maintain emphasis on discourse as well as to better document the multitude of impulses that are felt in this city.
Post-Office is interested in a criticism that doesn’t necessarily cheerlead cultural production, that is able to observe exhibitions, events, and actions for their quality, their intentions, their craft, and their timeliness. Having an accessible platform available to record these thoughts for current and future reflection is valuable. POAJ will morph and change over time as it gains a better sense for where it fits in the cultural dialogue to best cater to these interests.
At its outset, POAJ is a digital space that encourages submissions from artists, curators, students, writers, and non-writers. Aside from strict “arts writing,” POAJ is interested in open-ended essay writing that is interested in developing thoughts on topics on design, economics, social interaction, history, etc.
