THEME: Racial justice with particular focus on mass incarceration

There are 2.2 million people currently in our nation’s prisons or jails, 1 million of whom are African American. This is a 500 percent increase over the past thirty years and if current trends continue, one in three black males born today can expect to spend time in prison during his lifetime. Together, African American and Hispanics comprised 58 percent of all prisoners in 2008 even though African Americans and Hispanics make up approximately one quarter of the U.S. population.

7TH ANNUAL DRAWING DISCOURSE EXHIBITION – As part of an ongoing commitment to promote drawing practices in the visual arts, the University of North Carolina Asheville (UNC Asheville) invites artists to submit entries to an International juried exhibition of contemporary drawing.  UNC Asheville seeks to examine drawing as it is practiced and defined by today’s artists.  Such an exhibition will demonstrate the continued significance of drawing through both conventional and innovative methods.  Accepted work will be exhibited in UNC Asheville’s S. Tucker Cooke Gallery from Jan. 15, 2016 through Feb. 12, 2016. This exhibition will be accompanied by cash awards and an exhibition catalogue.
