On Friday, June 19th, I attended the reception for three shows at School 33 Art Center, including the reception of “Pentimento”, a solo exhibition by Mike McConnell, located in the Members Gallery on the second floor of School 33. This past Friday, June 19th, I attended the opening of three (yes, THREE!) exhibitions at School 33 Art Center, which also served as the Kickoff event for the Artscape Gallery Network. It was a lively opening indeed! The School 33 Main Gallery houses the Studio Artist Biennial Exhibition, with solo exhibitions “Pentimento” and “Waiting for Something to Happen,” in the Members’ Gallery and Project Space on the second floor, respectively. These exhibitions are now on view until August 22nd, 2015. SANDTOWN EMPLOYS 80 CITY YOUTH THROUGH COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECTS
Summer program offers workforce development and training from professional artists
The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, in partnership with Jubilee Arts, launch Art @ Work: Sandtown, a five-week summer employment program for Baltimore City youth. Beginning Monday, June 29 through Friday, July 31, Art @ Work: Sandtown will employ 80 young people as artist apprentices under master teaching artists to create eight highly visible murals throughout their community. The program is an expansion of Jubilee Arts’ year-round art programs for teens. Art @ Work employs youth enrolled in the city’s “YouthWorks” initiative, a workforce development program that matches young people between the ages of 14 and 21 to five-week work experiences with private sector, nonprofit, and city and state government employers.

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts (BOPA) and the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance (GBCA) are pleased to announce the thirteen artists and organizations selected for 2015 Maryland State Arts Council Mini-Grants. This past Friday, June 19th, I was lucky enough to visit Jonathan Latiano’s studio and interview him briefly about himself and his current projects. His work space is located in School 33 Art Center, just upstairs from one of School 33’s current exhibitions that Jonathan is participating in, the Studio Artist Biennial. Jonathan was very generous with his time and we discussed a multitude of topics surrounding his interests, the themes in his work, and his ongoing projects. This past Friday, June 19th, I was lucky enough to visit Magnolia Laurie’s studio to talk to her about her work and her ideas. Magnolia is a Sondheim Artscape Prize Finalist this year, and her work can be seen in the upcoming finalists exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art, on view June 24th through August 9th, 2015. Speaking with Magnolia and seeing her workspace, I got a great sense of how she fits in with this year’s group of Sondheim Prize Finalists, an amazingly talented and diverse group of artists.
