CALL DESCRIPTION
THE BARN marks the third of four calls for LAND&ART@MARC: A 4 SEASON PROJECT, a collaboration between MARC and WSG to develop and realize land art and land use projects through the four seasons of the year, with the primary focus on farming and agricultural issues. The collaboration seeks to generate a diverse and multilayered program throughout the year that examines farming, agricultural themes in today’s societal landscape, and environmental issues through collaborative and participatory creative projects with visitors, volunteers, members, and communities.
We are proud to announce a call for entry for an indoor group exhibition to take place in the horse barn at the Baltimore County Agricultural Center’s property that will be transformed into a micro-gallery and art laboratory during the time of the winter season. We are seeking artist teams to collaborate on diverse ideas that incorporate interdisciplinary objectives and relate to the concept of the barn itself. Artist teams are welcome to create installations, sculptures, paintings, or multimedia visuals exploring the theme of the barn with regard to structure, architecture, anthropology (domestication), history, storytelling agriculture, and other disciplines.
THE BARN project provides a horse barn with eight single stalls and an open area in the center. Artist teams will be allowed one stall per team in which to install artwork. A list of links is included below to help applicants investigate interdisciplinary concepts relating to this project.
WORK TO BE CONSIDERED
- Artist teams are permitted to install artwork that reflects on the theme THE BARN, including ideas of its structure, architecture, history, memory, or specific interdisciplinary connections to farming or agriculture.
- A team must consist of at least of two artists. The collaborating artists have to indicate the research field, resources, or collaborating researchers.
- Artists who apply with a collaborative concept will install their work inside a single stall that can consist of multiple pieces in any combination of materials or media, as long as it fits into the size of the stall.
- a maximum of 10 images per artist team will be considered. In addition, artist teams should also upload the following information in a .pdf document (not more than one page) regarding the collaborative artwork:
- a description of where the project pieces are supposed to be placed
- the background or narrative information about the project
- an explanation of how the project relates to the site
- any maintenance that will be required during the course of the exhibition
- a list of materials, machinery, tools, or volunteer workforce you want to request from MARC
- and if there is light, sound, or movement that may impact the ability of others to experience nearby artworks
ELIGIBILITY The exhibition is open to current members of the Washington Sculptors Group only. Artists may join WSG by paying annual dues of $45 ($15 for full-time students). Prospective members may download a membership form from the WSG website, www.washingtonsculptors.org, and send in a check, or may join online with your submission to the exhibition. WSG members must have paid their dues for 2015 by the entry deadline to be eligible for this exhibition. The address label on this Call or the most recent copy of the WSG newsletter, The Washington Sculptor, will show your membership status (example: MEMBER THROUGH 2015). Notices for 2015 dues were mailed Dec. 2014.
