Program Description:

The Core Residency Program awards residencies to exceptional, highly motivated visual artists and critical writers who have completed their undergraduate or graduate training and are working to develop a sustainable practice. Established in 1982, the Core artist residencies encourage intensive and innovative studio practice, and the Core critical studies residencies, added in 1998, broaden the scope of the critical dialogue that is central to the practices of all Core residents and provide an opportunity for writers to pursue independent curatorial and writing projects. Residents participate in a yearlong seminar and engage with a wide range of leading artists, critics, curators, and art historians, who are invited to meet individually with the residents, lead group seminars, and deliver public lectures.

The residency term is nine months, from September to May, and fellows may apply for a second term. Each spring the program mounts an exhibition of work produced during the current residency term, which is accompanied by a publication with the purpose of documenting the work of all the residents.

Residents receive a $14,000 stipend, 24-hour access to a private studio or office, and borrowing privileges at the Museum’s Hirsch Library and Rice University’s Fondren Library.

Program Description:

The BHQFU Summer Emerging Artist Residency Program is open to emerging artists working in all disciplines, 18 years of age or older, who currently live and work in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, or Staten Island. There is no fee to apply. We are especially interested in artists who can work collaboratively in a flexible, group environment. Artists enrolled in a degree-seeking program during the time of the residency are not eligible to apply.BHQFU will select five emerging artists from different backgrounds and disciplines who live and work in one of the five New York City boroughs. Selected artists will get FREE, 24/7-access to a shared studio space to make, collaborate, and navigate the murky waters of cooperative space. Additionally, a collective stipend will be awarded to the group to support their ideas for programming over the three-month period. Regular group critiques with visiting critics will provide participants with valuable, diverse feedback, and studio visits and public lectures with various visiting artists will provide one-on-one conversations coupled with formal, public presentations to expose residents to a variety of contemporary approaches to art making.

From the outset, participants, with the support of the BHQFU team, will be asked to design and adapt the program to meet their specific needs through regular group meetings culminating in a group-determined public finale.

VisArts invites artists working in all media to apply for 2016 Solo Exhibitions in the Gibbs Street Gallery and Common Ground Gallery.

The Gibbs Street Gallery offers exhibitions that explore the breadth of contemporary art featuring emerging to mid-career artists. Exhibits reflect a wide range of media and experimental approaches that offer the viewer unexpected interactions with art. The gallery is approximately 1,100 square feet with 16 ft. ceilings. It is on the street level with floor to ceiling windows along one wall. International, national and local artists are welcome to apply.

The Common Ground Gallery features exhibitions that reflect the creative pursuits of artists from our community. The gallery is located on the second floor and is approximately 300 square feet. Artists must live in the DC/Baltimore metro area to apply for a solo exhibition in this gallery.

Applicants who have participated in a solo exhibition at VisArts within the past two years are not eligible to apply.

Media Requirements: Images must be in .jpg, .jpeg, .png, or .gif file format. Minimum image resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Maximum file size 5MB per image. 2 minutes of video, film, sound or performance documentation = one work. Up to 10 minutes total.

2015 – 2017 Pre-Qualified Artist List

The City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department’s (MCAD) Public Art Program seeks to establish a new 2015 – 2017 pre-qualified list of artists and artist teams for consideration in upcoming public art projects. The City of Baltimore, the Baltimore Public Art Commission, and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts are seeking interested artists and/or artist collaborators to submit qualifications for consideration and inclusion in Baltimore’s Pre-Qualified Public Artist List.  The pre-qualified list will go into effect upon review and approval of the Public Art Commission and remain in effect for three years. This list will be utilized and referenced for upcoming public art projects under the 1%-for-Public Art Program, most importantly federally funded construction projects requiring artists and/or artist collaborators to work directly with  the overall project design firm to incorporate artwork into the plan.
